Fake monks asking for money in Perth CBD

Beware of fake monks in Perth CBD

Fake monks busted soliciting donations in Perth CBD

Police have confirmed the ā€˜fake’ monks actually Chinese tourists.Picture: AP
At least three Chinese men falsely claiming to be Buddhist monks have been seen around the Perth CBD today asking for donations.
Police have spoken to two of the men and have confirmed they are not working for a legitimate charity and are actually in Australia on tourist visas.
Concerned community members have also contacted media warning the men were offering blessings and tokens or prayer bracelets before requesting donations.

At least one of the men was showing people a booklet with records of generous donations in a bid to convince others to hand over cash.
Consumer Protection said it had received a tip from the public that a man claiming to be a monk was accepting donations on St George’s Terrace on Wednesday.
A spokesman said the claim had been investigated but no money had been witnessed changing hands.
Charity collectors are required to have a permit. Anyone approached in the street for money should ask to see evidence of a street collection permit.
Consumer Protection has previously investigated reports of fake monks collecting donations in Hay Street Mall in 2014.

Australia has four more fully ordained Buddhist nuns

We are very pleased to congratulate the four Australian Tibetan Buddhist sramaneris (female novice nuns) who in early March 2018 took their bhikshuni/bhikkhuni vows. After a beautiful ceremony the senior presiding bhikshuni/bhikkhuni gave a moving blessing: “The world has more chances to see women living a life which leads to the eradication of suffering. Let us show people another way of life. Let us enrich them with Dharma/Dhamma way of life. And let us show them that real happiness comes not from luxurious worldly things, not from a vicious circle gratifying sensual pleasures, but from the practise of ethics (sila), concentration (samadhi) and wisdom (panna)”.

Each of the new bhikshunis/bhikkhunis expressed their deep gratitude to BSV-NBM for hosting the first platform, the ordination ceremony conducted by the nuns; and to BSWA-Bodhinyana Monastery for hosting the second platform, the confirmation ceremony conducted by the monks.

The following day they participated in an annual Buddhist gathering attended by monastics and laypeople from around Australia (as pictured).

We wish them every success on this new stage of their spiritual journey!

[PUBLIC NOTICE]

The Buddhist Council of Western Australia (BCWA) brings to your attention its concerns related to “Buddhism & Australia’sā€ 2018 conference (website: www.buddhismandaustralia.com).

The “PARTICIPANTSā€ and ā€œHOMEā€ pages of the website promoting the conference is in our view ambiguous and may create the impression that the well respected Western Australian monks Ajahn Brahm, Ajahn Brahmali and Ajahn Sujato support this conference or that they will be attending the conference.

For the avoidance of doubt, this is to inform the general public that these Ajahns and BCWA have NOT supported or attended any of the conferences held by the organisers of Buddhism & Australia except for its 2012 conference only.

Thus, any reference to the Ajahns and/or BCWA representatives on the International Buddhist Conference only refers to their 2012 attendance and is not current.

Buddhist Council of WA shared Barry Kerzin’s post.

Soon another year is coming to an end. We are continually moving closer to our death. Often we do not recognize this fact of life and death. For many of us, there is some confidence that this is not the end, rather the end of one life in a stream of many, maybe infinite lives. Still what will come in the next life is uncertain. It is determined by our actions of body, speech, and mind we do right now. So for 2018 let’s make a new year’s resolution to work hard at positive behavior, words, and thoughts. No guilt when we miss the mark. Rejoice in our efforts, and have gratitude for even the next breath. Happy New Year to all! Emaho!
