An Australian Buddhist Monk, who was ordained and now resides at the Monastery in Kelmscott, will be going into silent retreat as part of his practises to try slow down thoughts and move into deeper meditation practices.

Buddhist Monk Venerable Kassapa first became a Buddhist in 2011 after experiencing suicidal depression in 2009.

“In the process of putting my life back together, I started trying to fill my life with more meaningful things,” he said.

“In the process of following philosophy and looking into religions I came across Buddhism.”

It was then the venerable Kassapa visited the Serpentine Monastery in 2014 for a holiday. Read more »

The passing of Laurence Mills, the former Phra Khantipalo

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Laurence Mills, the former Phra Khantipalo. He was a well known teacher in the Theravadan tradition and was also well known to Tibetan Buddhist practitioners. He is considered one of the seminal figures of Buddhist teaching in Australia. He died on Monday 5 July after many years of ill health, during which time a number of his former students supported him with much care and compassion. Read more »

For the First Time Ever, the White House Celebrates Vesak, the Buddha’s Birthday

Representatives from the three major Buddhist traditions gathered for prayers and candle lighting.

Wednesday, May 26, 2021 marked a historic moment for Buddhists in the US. For the first time ever, the White House celebrated Vesak, the holiday that commemorates the Buddha’s birthday, death, and enlightenment.

Wangmo Dixey, Executive Director of Dharma College and President of the International Buddhist Association of America, coordinated the event with the offices of Mr. Shekar Narasimhan, President of the Dharma Into Action Foundation. The celebration included candle lighting with the Second Gentleman, Mr. Douglas Emhoff, and prayers by leaders from the three major Buddist traditions.
